Public transport for the Christmas season Rome’s Christmas transport plan is in operation until 24 December, and from 2-29 January, with increased buses into the city centre from 10.30-20.30, to encourage people to use public transport for their Christmas shopping and for the new year sales.
Included in the plan is the return of the free shuttle route Shopping 1 that connects city centre metro stations Spagna, Flaminio and Barberini, as well as to other popular bus routes and the large underground car park in Villa Borghese. However, last year’s Shopping 2 (Tor di Quinto) and Shopping 3 (Monte Mario) lines are not making a comeback this year.
The Shopping 1 route starts and ends at Porta Pinciana, with stops at Via Crispi, Via Sistina, Piazza Trinità dei Monti, Viale G. D'Annunzio, Piazza del Popolo, Via di Ripetta, Piazza Augusto Imperatore, Via Tomacelli, Via di Monte Brianzo, Corso Rinascimento, Via del Teatro Valle, Piazza della Minerva, Piazza del Collegio Romano, Largo Chigi, Via del Tritone and Via Veneto. The bus runs until 24 December from 11.30-20.30, returning in the new year from 2-29 January.
On the weekend of 17 and 18 December there will be a more frequent metro service on the A and B lines, while on Saturday 17 December the Roma-Giardinetti light rail service will follow its usual mid-week timetable.
From 20 December until 16 January, the Metro A line will stay open until 23.30 every day of the week except Saturdays when it closes at the later hour of 01.30. During this period the MA1 and MA2 substitute shuttle buses will be suspended.
The will be a lesser service on both metro lines over the Christmas weekend: on Saturday 24 December trains run from 05.30-21.00, and on Sunday 25 December from 08.00-13.00.
The limited traffic zone (ZTL) will be active in the historic centre from 14.00 to 18.00 on 18 December and 6 January; from 12-16 December from 06.30-18.00; on 17 December from 14.00-18.00, and from 19-24 December from 06.30 to 20.00. Some of the city’s car parks are providing parking at reduced rates.
